I used to always overthink my mix until I changed my perspective on this...

As EDM producers, we tend to get caught up on our mix and how "professional" it sounds.

We'll sit on songs for months, tweaking little things in the hopes it makes a difference.

But in the end it doesn't, and we can't settle on being happy with our mix.

And this is superrrr frustrating!

Over many years and talking with other more experienced producers about it, here's what I learned.

Feelings vs Fancy-ness

Instead of getting caught up in the technical aspects of the mix, focus on how it makes you feel emotionally.

Like from start to finish, how does your full song make you feel?

Does it give the mood and energy you’re going for... If not why?

  • A synth part might be too loud

  • There might be too much mid lows

  • Or maybe there isn't enough high end…

Trust your instincts and emotions over being technically ‘perfect’ in your mix.

Perfection is subjective and will be unattainable when based on your own ideals/standards.

You will always be chasing for an ideal which will always be ahead of where you are.

No one ever reaches their ideal because your ideal will always move higher and higher as you get better.

The solution to perfectionism?

Embrace the imperfections in your mix as part of its unique character and charm.

Sometimes, those imperfections can add depth and personality to your music.

Now to be more practical, getting feedback from others is a cheat code to this overthinking state you have.

Share your mix with trusted friends, fellow producers, or online communities for feedback.

Its why having a strong network of other producers who you can trust their opinion on is key.

Producers who are more experienced than you.

Producers who aren't your close friends and have no reason to sugur coat the truth about your song or mix.

Producers who have been through what you're going through but have overcome it.

Usually, an outside perspective can help you identify areas for improvement.

Or reassure you that your mix is on the right track and your’re just overthinking it.

Regardless, at the end of the day - a song that feels good to listen to is better than a song thats technically perfect in the mix.

Peace,

Vig

PS. Remember that community for sound design I mentioned last week?

We are at 7/12 already and I only need 5 more people to join.
